The cork oak tree is covered with thick knotty bark, which may have been developed to survive forest fires. This is the source of cork. After harvesting, the bark is peeled off and cut from the tree, and then left to rest on the tree. The bark will eventually grow back, and it can be harvested every nine to twelve years. Healthy cork oak with a lifespan of 200 years can be harvested up to 16 times.
